Pets — if you love animals, this is a HUGE area with lots of great opportunites for making money, so I’m going to break this into several posts. This post will cover Pet Sitting.
Pet Sitting can mean different things to different people, but to me a Pet Sitter is an adult who I pay to come to my home while I am out of town, and feed and care for my animals. Most Pet Sitters I know charge by the trip, not by the number of pets involved. One excellent Pet Sitter I know charges $15 per trip. What do you get for this $15? It depends on your pets, but generally she feeds, checks water, cleans boxes, and spends time with the pet or pets, giving them some personal attention, which may be talking and petting, or possibly playing. She usually spends half an hour to an hour per trip. This lady is very knowledgeable about animals and very reliable — consequently she is always busy and in demand.
The lady I’ve been discussing works in a very specific area only, and makes good part time money. She doesn’t need or want her business to become a full time venture, or one where she would need partners or employees. However, she could very easily expand her business if she wanted to, based on her great reputation. Her business is based on Trust and Referrals.
Requirements: No particular tools required, other than reliable transportation. Must be experienced with the animal types you agree to Sit, whether it be cats, dogs, hamsters, snakes, fish, or whatever. And you absolutely must love animals.
Being Bonded would definitely be a plus, because you will be entering people’s homes while they are gone. For this same reason, some Liability Insurance would also be a good idea. Build your Referrals List, be honest, dependable, and love animals. And if you decide to start Pet Sitting in my part of town, let me know, the lady I’ve mentioned above doesn’t come to this area, and I really need a good Pet Sitter. I have several neighbors who also need someone. Bet you have friends and neighbors who would love to have a good Pet Sitter, too!!
